Whisper Rock Golf Club - Upper
Scottsdale, Arizona
A PGA Tour player hangout and one of America's most exclusive clubs, Whisper Rock Upper is a Tom Fazio design that flows through pristine Sonoran Desert terrain. Many touring professionals call this home, and the course demands precision off the tee.
History & Heritage
Whisper Rock Golf Club was founded by Gregg Tryhus, who envisioned creating the ultimate pure-golf experience in the Sonoran Desert north of Scottsdale. The Lower Course, designed by Tryhus and Gary Stephenson, opened in 2001 and quickly gained a following among serious players and PGA Tour professionals seeking a no-frills golf club focused entirely on the quality of the game.
The Upper Course, designed by Tom Fazio, opened in January 2005 as the centerpiece of the 36-hole facility. Fazio crafted wider fairways and larger greens than the Lower Course, but the layout's length -- stretching to 7,508 yards from the tips -- and its exposure to desert winds create a formidable test. The Upper Course has been called the Pine Valley of the Southwest for its demanding shot values and pristine conditioning.
Whisper Rock operates with a no-tee-time policy and has become one of the most popular home clubs for PGA Tour professionals. The world-class practice facility, relaxed atmosphere, and exceptional men's grill have made it a gathering place for the game's best players during the Arizona swing and throughout the year.
Signature Holes
A strong opening par 4 that sets the tone for the round. The tee shot must find the fairway to set up an approach into a well-defended green on this demanding opener.
One of the longest and most challenging par 4s on the course at 487 yards. Accuracy off the tee is essential as the desert waste areas punish errant drives, and the lengthy approach demands precise distance control.
The signature hole at Whisper Rock Upper. Despite its modest length of 340 yards, this par 4 requires a precise tee shot from an elevated tee to the fairway below, followed by a demanding approach to a well-guarded green.
A fitting finishing hole that demands two quality shots. The tee shot must navigate desert terrain, and the approach plays to a green complex that provides a dramatic conclusion to the round.
What to Expect
Whisper Rock Upper delivers a premium private club experience in a strikingly beautiful Sonoran Desert setting. The Fazio design features generous fairways compared to the tighter Lower Course, but the 7,508-yard length and frequent desert winds make it a serious test. Conditioning is immaculate year-round, with fast greens and firm fairways providing a tour-quality playing surface.
The no-tee-time policy means members simply show up and play, creating a relaxed atmosphere that appeals to serious golfers. The practice facility is widely regarded as one of the best in the country, and the men's grill is a popular gathering spot. Forecaddies are available and recommended for first-time guests.
Playing Tips
At over 7,500 yards the Upper Course plays long, but the generous fairways reward aggressive tee shots. Keeping the ball in play is paramount, as desert waste areas are unforgiving. The wider corridors off the tee are offset by demanding approach shots to greens that often feature firm surfaces and subtle contours.
Wind is a major factor, especially in the afternoon. Club selection on approach shots should account for gusts that can easily move the ball one to two clubs. The greens are typically fast, so approach shots that land below the hole leave the most manageable putts.
