Grayhawk Golf Club - Raptor Course

Scottsdale, Arizona

Host of the NCAA Championship, Grayhawk's Raptor Course is a Tom Fazio desert design with wide fairways, bold bunkering, and one of the best post-round scenes in golf at Phil's Grill.

History & Heritage

Grayhawk Golf Club opened its Raptor Course in 1995, designed by Tom Fazio on the northern edge of Scottsdale, Arizona. The Raptor joined the existing Talon Course (designed by David Graham and Gary Panks) to create one of the top public golf facilities in the American Southwest.

The Raptor has hosted the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Golf Championships from 2021 to 2023, the PGA Junior League National Championship (2016-2022), and numerous AJGA events. Tom Fazio rerouted holes 15 and 16 and shortened the 17th in a 2015 update.

Grayhawk is famous for its post-round scene at Phil's Grill, the outdoor restaurant named after Phil Mickelson where golfers gather on the expansive patio. The facility has become a must-play destination for visiting golfers in Scottsdale.

Signature Holes

3
Hole 3 Par 5 · 553 yards

A risk-reward par 5 that tempts long hitters to reach in two. The desert terrain frames the hole and Fazio's bunkering creates strategic decisions.

7
Hole 7 Par 3 · 205 yards

A demanding par 3 with a desert wash fronting the green. Club selection is critical as the green is well-defended by bunkers.

14
Hole 14 Par 4 · 450 yards

One of the strongest par 4s on the course requiring two precise shots through the desert landscape to a well-protected green.

18
Hole 18 Par 4 · 438 yards

A memorable finishing hole leading players back toward the clubhouse and Phil's Grill. The approach to the green demands accuracy under pressure.

What to Expect

The Raptor is a desert design with wider fairways than typical target-desert courses, reflecting Fazio's player-friendly philosophy. At 7,135 yards from the tips the course is a serious test but plays fairly from forward tees. Desert washes and native vegetation frame the holes without creating excessive forced carries.

The post-round scene at Phil's Grill is a Scottsdale institution. The facility is consistently rated among the top public golf experiences in Arizona.

Playing Tips

The desert air allows the ball to fly further than at sea level, so adjust club selection accordingly. Morning rounds are preferred during peak season as afternoon winds can be challenging.

Keep the ball on maintained turf. Balls that venture into the desert waste areas are often unplayable. The greens are typically fast and true, rewarding precise approach shots.
