The Inside Swing

TPC Scottsdale - Stadium Course

Scottsdale, Arizona

Home of the WM Phoenix Open — the most attended event in golf — TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course is a desert classic. The iconic 16th hole's natural amphitheater is legendary, and the course delivers championship golf against a stunning Sonoran Desert backdrop.

History & Heritage

TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course was designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish and opened in January 1986, commissioned by the PGA Tour to create a purpose-built tournament venue in the Sonoran Desert. The course was constructed with spectator viewing in mind, featuring natural amphitheaters and mounding.

The Stadium Course has hosted what is now the WM Phoenix Open since 1987, and the event has grown into the most attended tournament in golf, regularly drawing over 700,000 spectators. The par-3 16th hole has become the most famous hole in tournament golf, with temporary grandstands creating a 20,000-seat coliseum that has witnessed 12 aces in tournament history, including Tiger Woods's iconic 1997 hole-in-one.

Weiskopf returned to renovate the course in 2014, modernizing the layout while preserving the spectator-friendly design. The course features Bermuda and ryegrass surfaces, deep bunkers, and the dramatic desert mountain backdrop that defines Scottsdale golf.

Signature Holes

3
Hole 3 Par 5 · 558 yards

A risk-reward par 5 tempting long hitters to reach in two. The desert landscape frames the hole beautifully with strategic bunkering guarding the approach.

7
Hole 7 Par 3 · 215 yards

A challenging long par 3 to a well-defended green complex. One of the quieter but more demanding holes on the course.

15
Hole 15 Par 5 · 501 yards

A reachable par 5 setting up the dramatic finish. Water and bunkers guard the approach for those going for the green in two.

16
Hole 16 Par 3 · 163 yards

The most famous par 3 in golf. During the WM Phoenix Open, temporary grandstands create a 20,000-seat coliseum producing an atmosphere unlike anything in sport. The hole has witnessed 12 aces in tournament history.

What to Expect

TPC Scottsdale plays through the Sonoran Desert with views of the McDowell Mountains. At 7,261 yards with a par of 71, the course features long par 4s, deep bunkers, spectator mounding, and fast undulating greens. The desert environment means dry conditions and firm fairways.

During peak season (January through April), the course is in pristine condition with overseeded ryegrass. Summer months bring desert heat and Bermuda grass conditions.

Playing Tips

The par 4s are generally long, so expect plenty of mid-to-long irons into greens. Accuracy off the tee is important as desert rough and native areas bordering fairways will cost strokes. The greens are fast with more slope than they appear.

The closing stretch from 15 through 18 offers scoring opportunities but also significant risk. Play within yourself and take advantage of the reachable par 5s.
