The Inside Swing

Tobacco Road Golf Club

Pinehurst, North Carolina

The most polarizing course in the Sandhills, Tobacco Road is a Mike Strantz creation that defies convention. Massive dunes, blind shots, and creative green complexes create a golf experience unlike anything else in America.

History & Heritage

Tobacco Road Golf Club opened in 1998 on the site of an old sand quarry near Sanford, North Carolina, about 30 minutes from Pinehurst. Architect Mike Strantz embraced the raw, scarred terrain rather than trying to tame it, creating what many consider the most unconventional and polarizing golf course in America. The massive sand dunes, some reaching 50 feet high, and blind shots challenged every assumption about traditional golf course design.

Strantz was known as "The Maverick" of golf architecture, and Tobacco Road is the course most often mentioned when discussing his legacy. Built on a shoestring budget, Strantz used the natural sand quarry topography to create dramatic elevation changes and visual spectacles that divide golfers into passionate fans and vocal critics.

More than 25 years after its opening, Tobacco Road has only grown in stature and influence. Many credit it as a precursor to modern bold designs at places like Streamsong and Sand Valley. The course continues to attract golfers from around the world seeking a truly unique experience in the North Carolina Sandhills.

What to Expect

Tobacco Road is a completely unique golf experience. At 6,554 yards and par 71, it is not long, but the challenge comes from the creativity and unconventionality of the design. Expect blind shots, massive sand dunes, wildly creative green complexes, and a visual experience unlike any other course in America. A yardage book is highly recommended.

The course is built on a former sand quarry, so the terrain is sandy and dramatic with significant elevation changes. Come with an open mind and a sense of adventure.

Playing Tips

A yardage book is essential for first-time players. Many holes feature blind shots, and without knowledge of the landing areas, the course can feel random rather than strategic. The more you play Tobacco Road, the more the genius of the design reveals itself.

Do not fight the course -- embrace it. Missing in the wrong spot can lead to big numbers, so study the green complexes carefully and play to the safe sides when in doubt. The par 3s are a particular strength and offer some of the most visually dramatic shots in Sandhills golf.
