Rustic Canyon Golf Course

Los Angeles, California

A Gil Hanse/Geoff Shackelford design in Moorpark, Rustic Canyon is a links-inspired layout that stands as one of the best public golf values in America. The no-frills, walk-friendly course lets the architecture speak for itself.

History & Heritage

Rustic Canyon Golf Course opened in 2002 on a former sheep ranch in Moorpark, California. It was a collaboration between Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner, and golf writer Geoff Shackelford, who set out to prove Golden Age design virtues could work on a value-priced public course.

Built without detailed blueprints, Hanse Golf shaped contoured green complexes and sculpted bunkers from natural terrain in a minimalist approach inspired by early 20th-century architects. The course opened to rave reviews.

Rustic Canyon is consistently ranked among the best public courses in the United States and has become a pilgrimage site for architecture enthusiasts.

Signature Holes

Hole 13 Par 4 · 315 yards

A short drivable par 4 embodying the strategic nature of the design with multiple options off the tee.

15
Hole 15 Par 3 · 147 yards

A short par 3 with a deceptive green complex featuring significant contour. Accuracy matters more than distance.

16
Hole 16 Par 4 · 479 yards

What to Expect

Rustic Canyon is a minimalist links-inspired design that strips golf to its essentials. The natural terrain and creative architecture speak for themselves.
