Long the Chicago-area's premier public championship course, Cog Hill No. 4 "Dubsdread" hosted the BMW Championship and Western Open for decades. The Rees Jones renovation maintained the course's fearsome reputation while modernizing it for championship play.

History & Heritage

Cog Hill was founded in Lemont, Illinois in 1927. Course No. 4 Dubsdread, designed by Dick Wilson and Joe Lee, opened in 1964. The name means dreaded by dubs reflecting its championship difficulty.

Dubsdread hosted the Western Open from 1962 to 2006, the BMW Championship, and the 1997 U.S. Amateur. Tiger Woods won the 2009 BMW Championship here. Rees Jones completed a $5 million renovation in 2008. Another Jones renovation finished in 2025.

What to Expect

Classic Midwest parkland design at 7,547 yards with tight landing areas and heavily bunkered greens. Bent grass throughout with excellent conditioning. One of four courses at Cog Hill, all open to the public.

Playing Tips

Accuracy off the tee is paramount. Fairways are pinched by deep bunkers. Greens are large but contoured with steep-faced bunkers requiring confident sand play.
