Quail Hollow Club
Charlotte, North Carolina
One of the PGA Tour's premier venues, Quail Hollow hosted the 2017 PGA Championship and the Presidents Cup. The "Green Mile" finishing stretch (holes 16-18) is one of the most demanding closes in championship golf.
History & Heritage
Quail Hollow Club was originally designed by George Cobb and opened in 1961 on what had been dairy farmland in south Charlotte, North Carolina. Cobb's vision included tree-lined fairways, strategically placed bunkering, and elevated putting surfaces. Arnold Palmer altered four holes in 1985, beginning the course's evolution toward championship status.
Tom Fazio became the club's architect starting in 1995 and carried out a major renovation in 1996 that fundamentally transformed the layout. Fazio's redesign gave Quail Hollow its contemporary character, including the creation of the famous Green Mile finishing stretch. Fazio Design has guided master planning at the club for over two decades, with additional renovation work completed ahead of the 2017 and 2025 PGA Championships.
Quail Hollow has become one of the premier venues in championship golf. The club hosted the Wells Fargo Championship annually starting in 2003, the 2017 PGA Championship won by Justin Thomas, the 2022 Presidents Cup, and the 2025 PGA Championship. The Green Mile -- holes 16, 17, and 18 -- has been statistically the toughest three-hole finishing stretch on the PGA Tour.
Signature Holes
The beginning of the infamous Green Mile. At 529 yards, this par 4 is one of the longest on the PGA Tour. Water guards the left side, and the green is perched above a creek.
The middle of the Green Mile, a demanding par 3 over water to a green angled away from the tee. Club selection and nerve are tested in equal measure.
The closing hole of the Green Mile. Water runs along the entire left side, and the approach must navigate bunkers and the creek to find a well-guarded green.
A short, strategic opening par 4 that sets the tone. Despite modest yardage, the green is well-defended and demands a precise approach.
What to Expect
Quail Hollow is a championship-caliber private club that plays through mature hardwood forests in south Charlotte. The Cobb/Fazio design stretches to 7,554 yards from the championship tees with a par of 72. The front nine is generally more scoreable, while the back nine ratchets up the difficulty dramatically.
Conditioning is exceptional, befitting a course that regularly hosts PGA Tour and major championship events. The green complexes are firm and fast, demanding precision on approach shots.
Playing Tips
The Green Mile demands respect. Playing holes 16-18 in even par is an excellent result. On 16, position off the tee is paramount given the extreme length. On 17, take enough club to reach the middle of the green. On 18, avoid the water left at all costs.
The front nine offers more birdie chances, so building a score early is essential. Approach shots must be hit to the correct tier of Fazio's multi-level greens throughout.
