The Golf Club at Newcastle - China Creek

Newcastle, Washington

Co-designed by Seattle native Fred Couples, China Creek sits on a forested ridge between Lake Washington and the Cascades. On clear days, golfers enjoy views of Mount Rainier, the Seattle skyline, and the Olympic Mountains from multiple holes.

History & Heritage

The Golf Club at Newcastle was developed on a forested ridgetop in Newcastle, Washington, on land that was once home to coal mining operations dating back to the 1880s. The ambitious 36-hole complex was designed by renowned architect Robert E. Cupp in consultation with Masters Champion and Seattle native Fred Couples. The Coal Creek course opened first in 1999, followed by the China Creek course shortly after.

The China Creek course takes its name from the Chinese immigrant workers who mined coal on the property in the 19th century. Cupp integrated the gently rolling terrain throughout the 6,632-yard layout, creating a course that combines characteristics of Pacific Northwest forest golf with dramatic ridgetop views. The collaboration with Fred Couples brought a tour player's perspective to the strategic design.

The entire Newcastle complex sits on 350 acres and includes a magnificent 44,000 square-foot clubhouse. On clear days, the elevated setting provides panoramic views of Mount Rainier, the Seattle skyline, Lake Washington, and the Olympic Mountains, making it one of the most visually spectacular golf facilities in the Pacific Northwest.

Signature Holes

1
Hole 1 Par 5 · 621 yards

A dramatic opening par 5 that stretches over 600 yards with sweeping views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. The downhill tee shot sets up a risk-reward second shot opportunity.

9
Hole 9 Par 3 · 195 yards

One of the top-rated par 3s at Newcastle, this hole plays from an elevated tee to a well-bunkered green with panoramic views of the Cascade Range as a backdrop.

15
Hole 15 Par 5 · 475 yards

The signature hole at Newcastle, this reachable par 5 features a blind tee shot followed by a bold second-shot decision. Bold players who attack the green are rewarded, but water and bunkers punish mistakes.

Hole 18 Par 4 · 435 yards

A strong finishing hole with views of Mount Rainier and the Seattle skyline. The demanding approach to an elevated green provides a memorable conclusion to the round.

What to Expect

China Creek at Newcastle delivers a Pacific Northwest golf experience defined by stunning natural beauty and strategic course design. The layout winds through mature forest with frequent elevation changes that create dramatic tee shots and approach angles. On clear days, the panoramic views of Mount Rainier, the Seattle skyline, and the Olympic Mountains are among the finest in Washington state golf.

The course is well-conditioned and plays through a mix of open ridgetop holes and tree-lined corridors. The facility includes excellent practice facilities, a world-class clubhouse, and the companion Coal Creek course for those looking to play 36 holes.

Playing Tips

Elevation changes are the defining characteristic of China Creek, so adjust your club selection accordingly. Downhill holes will play shorter than the yardage suggests, while uphill approaches require extra club. The ridgetop location means wind can be a significant factor, particularly on exposed holes.

The greens are well-maintained and true, but many feature subtle undulations that can be tricky to read. Take time to study the terrain around each green, as putts tend to break toward the valleys below. Book morning tee times for the best chance of clear weather and spectacular views.
